Catherine Zeta-Jones’s part in the original Broadway musical. The only actress in decades to win an acting Oscar for a musical (“Chicago” 2002) had her part written specifically for this film. Zeta-Jones plays Patricia Whitmore, the mayor’s wife who has her own right-wing agenda. The role was created to provide conflict in the script by revisiting some of the cultural censorship prevalent in that period. But the part is a lot more fun than it sounds; all Shankman had to do was tell Zeta-Jones about the role and she was in. She didn’t even need to read the script. “When Adam called me up, I just said, ‘When do I start?’ I knew it would be a blast and I had to be a part of it” says Zeta-Jones.
