Fashion Report Card: 2009 MTV Movie Awards

SHOW THUMBNAILS

After award shows, it's always fun to look at the red carpet fashions and divide up the looks into "Best" and "Worst" categories. But at Sunday's MTV Movie Awards, the stars didn't give us much we could file under "Best." Yeah, it's MTV and it's summer, so wild looks and short skirts are to be expected, but the garish colors and unflattering designs would be out of place any time, any where. So we may have to grade on a curve.

Grade: B-
Her ultra-mini with shiny gold floral print isn't atrocious, but her ridiculously high heels are an ankle sprain waiting to happen, and the slicked back hair is severely unflattering.

Grade: A
Sienna was one of the few standouts of the show. She sparkled in a long-sleeved emerald green shirtdress.

Grade: C
Kristen must have known she'd be getting a lot of exercise going up to the podium over and over, because there's no other reason to pair her red-with-black cobweb mini with Chuck Taylors.

Grade: B
The color of Vanessa's dress was bright and summery, and the neckline was low and a little flirty. But the rest is a shimmery but formless muddle.

Grade: B-
Strapless dresses with short, frilly skirts were definitely the rage on the red carpet. Paris went with peach, and overly elaborate sequined detailing at the neckline.

Grade: B
Here's a black, strapless bubble dress that works. Kristin's got a bit of a early '80s Madonna look, but at least she went without the lacy gloves.

Grade: C-
And here's a black, strapless bubble dress that doesn't work. With those wrinkles it looks like Anna slept in her outfit.

Photo by Jason Merritt, Getty ImagesASHLEY TISDALE
Grade: C+
Ashley won the award for Female Breakout Performance in "High School Musical 3," but it appears like she's trying to break away from Sharpay with her purple leather mini and straight brunette locks.

Photo by Jason Merritt, Getty ImagesMALIN AKERMAN
Grade: C-
She was a superhero in "Watchmen," so it seems that Malin in her Dolce and Gabbana white suit is walking the red carpet as her secret identity: Sharon Stone.

Grade: C
Finally, there's someone who can actually justify looking like an irresponsible teenager. So why does Miley wear this bland halter dress that makes her look like she's attending a business conference, not an award show?

Grade: D+
Rumer obviously realized a lot of other women would be wearing their little black dress, and she rightly assumed that the one accessory no one else would have would be a stained glass window.

Grade: D
How this Oscar nominee picked a strapless dress with some sort of apron featuring black-and-white prints of old paintings is a "Curious Case," indeed. The Liza Minnelli hairdo isn't helping matters at all.

Grade: B+
While most of the attendees took their cues from the 1980s, Ashley went back a few more decades. But the slinky flower-print looks great on her, and the hair gives her a vaguely Elizabeth Taylor look.

Grade: C
Remember the stretchy, oddly-cut, futuristic outfits Charlize Theron wore in that terrible movie, "Aeon Flux"? Someone tell Leighton that even though she looks the part, she's not getting the lead in the sequel.

Photo by Jason Merritt, Getty ImagesLEANN RIMES
Grade: C+
OK, there have been some sharp critiques of ladies who were too dressed down, but Leann went too far the other way. Her gown was black, long, shimmering, and way out of place.

Photo by Jason Merritt, Getty ImagesHAYDEN PANETTIERE
Grade: B+
It's another dark-colored mini, but the halter neck distinguished Hayden from some of the others, and the print along the hemline makes it pop.

Photo by Steve Granitz, WireImageSANDRA BULLOCK
Grade: C
Sandra's ensemble has a number of different little touches, none of which work. The scoop neck, the belt, the line, the shoulder bow, and especially the tights. The navy blue color isn't bad, though.

Photo by Jason Merritt, Getty ImagesMONIQUE COLEMAN
Grade: C-
Really, Monique? Her shiny silver dress might be acceptable if the skirt didn't flare out like she was standing over a subway grate, Marilyn-style. The black ruffles make it look even more impossible to sit down in.

Photo by Jason Merritt, Getty ImagesELIZABETH REASER
Grade: C+
She's a vampire, so of course Elizabeth would wear all black. It's simple, sure, but she dispensed with a shirt under her jacket so you remember she couldn't really be the mother of a bunch of teenagers.

Photo by Kevin Mazur, WireImageSACHA BARON COHEN
Grade: F
Coordinating one's outfit doesn't guarantee it will be a success. Witness Sacha in character as Bruno. While Roberto Cavalli might appreciate the free publicity, even he would recommend keeping underwear under something.

Who had your favorite look at the MTV Movie Awards? Which outfit was the biggest disappointment? Give us your opinion in the comments.

  • megan fox's hair makes her look like more of an alien than she already does...the dress is great though. kristen stewart was bold with the chucks and she had every right to be. i think she pulled it off just fine. it fits her against the grain personality.

  • Sienna Miller definitely had the best look, but I think Megan Fox, Ashley Tisdale, and Leighton Meester also looked great by wearing edgier fashions appropriate for the MTV awards. Overall, I was not impressed by the critic's commentary.

  • I LIKED ASHLEY TISDALE THE BEST. BUT WOULD LIKE TO SEE HER OUTFIT W/KRISTIN BELL'S SHOES! AND I DON'T THINK THAT MILEY CYRUS LOOKED LIKED SHE WAS DRESSED FOR BUSINESS. SHE'S A TEENAGER AND AT LEAST THINGS AREN'T HANGING OUT OR SPILLING OVER. I THINK 90% OF THE LADIES LOOKED WONDERFUL.

  • Why do these women NOT KNOW how to dress? For being "high fashion" celebrities, none of these people know when they look horrible in the mirror. Like Elizabeth for exampe, that dress would have been nice if she didn't wear those hideous shoes. Ugh. I'm going to be famous one day and never follow trends, and make sure I always stick to my own style for the rest of
