While Burt Reynolds was a genuinely funny guy, many directors didn’t seem to know what to make of his cocky yet self-depreciating style, and two of his funniest moments on screen are essentially cameos, but outstanding cameos. In Woody Allen’s screen adaptation of the best-selling sex manual “Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask),” Reynolds and Tony Randall played the commanders of a crew coordinating the body functions of a man attempting to seduce his date, and Burt’s deadpan turn is perfect. A few years later, Mel Brooks cast Reynolds as himself in “Silent Movie,” and his take on “Burt Reynolds, Movie Star” is hilarious and self-aware in its playful arrogance. Too bad neither Woody or Mel chose to cast him again.
