British pay TV giant BSkyB, in which Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. owns a 39 percent stake, has been cleared of breaking the broadcasting code for hacking emails belonging to John Darwin, the so-called "canoe man" accused of faking his own death. Fire crews in Arizona are trying to control a blaze that killed 19 elite firefighters and destroyed 200 homes. San Francisco Bay area commuters were getting out the door earlier than usual July 1th, to try to avoid the traffic snarls expected because of the Bay Area Rapid Transit train strike. Two of BART's largest unions went on strike at midnight, halting train service for the first time in 16 years.
