They are Americans. Just like Jeremy Lin. Once we stop hyphenating and categorizing Americans, we'll be better off.

Is Charlize Theron African American since shes from South Africa?
      • Me 3 months ago
No. Charlize Theron is NOT African American. African-American is an ethnicity ONLY used to describe African slaves’ descendents born in the United States. African-Americans call themselves this because they do not know what country their ancestors originated from due to slavery. People born in Africa (Charlize Theron) and move to the United States would not call themselves African-American. They have their own ethnicities. The beautiful Charlize Theron ethnicity is Afrikaner, which are South Africans with European descent.

I thought the Oscars were awards for the best actors and actresses...not the best "white" actors and actresses or the best "black" actors and actresses....How about we stop categorizing people and just recognize a person for their accomplishments...why does it matter what color, religion, sexual orientation or nationality someone is....
      • meathammer 3 months ago
        so who is black oscar?
      • Jon 3 months ago
Gisartiste - you just had to throw in that "sexual orientation" huh? Let me tell you the difference - No matter how you try, no one can decide to NOT be black - not even Michael Jackson, or NOT to be of what ever race they were born. No one can DECIDE , where they were born, or the sex they WERE BORN - BUT - anyone, yes, anyone can DECIDE, can say to themselves, "I am a man and I'm not going to have sex with men anymore." "I'm a woman, and I'm not going to have sex with women anymore." If you believe this to be untrue, then the psychologists WERE right - Homosexuality IS a mental illness. Get real & cough up the truth- You were molested as a child by an adult or one of your cohorts, and decided "I like this". It's all deviant behavior breeding deviant behavior. It's anti-social & the bane of all humanity. Man-up & make a decision - you're either FOR mankind, or you're plotting its downfall. Am I a hater? - you bet. "Love what is good & hate evil." In all fiarness, you might not be a homosexual yourself, but the words I've spoken are true - have been & always will be.

Hey Jon, you have some serious issues & need to get back in to therapy, or at least back in the closet so we can lock it from the outside...

If we are to move this country toward no racism, then we must stop having awards, months and history based on race. (No matter what race is involved.) When Tony Dungy won the super bowl, everyone said he was the first minority to win the big game, but in fact, Tom Flores won in the early 80's. If we keep stereo typing, we keep segregating. Not everyone will be born with equal opprotunitie, therefore all must strive to get over their hurdles, whether it be class, religion, wealth or race. If someone works hard enough, they can be successful, just some will need to put out more effort than others.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

      Talk about killing a dream.............................

Are any of these people actually from Africa? I guess everyone seems to think that "African-American" means "Black".. What if you were the decendent of English immigrants, born in Johannesburg and became an American citizen, are you African-American, even if you're White?
    • Again  •  3 months ago
"African-Americans" Why??????? They're AMERICANS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I have european heritage... I hate this African-americans thing... They're just Americans, that's all

Every time I read about a celebration singling out the black race I feel saddened, It's as if they STILL don't accept the fact that we are all Americans

    • Sally  •  3 months ago
So...they are black...so what? If they are good actors or actresses WTH difference does it make what color their skin is? Way to keep racism going...make sure you mention "black" a couple hundred times this month.

      We celebrate black history month,
kindergartners in Cali are taught about gay history and
we never talk about history based solely on being white or straight.
      Is this social engineering?

I'm black and I don't understand the whole race, cultural separation thing that the government imposes on all us Americans. I think as an American society we all get along fairly well until the whole separation, and special treatment of other races comes in to play, and because of our government, and all the true racists that really push the race card. When I was in school, we were all taught all the aspects of history for every race, not just whites. I learned about black inventors, black leaders....etc, It just so happens that because there are more white people that have invented things, or have just had more exposure to wars (which these things make history) it's only common sense that there would be more topics on whites than blacks. Neither race, or any other race is superior to another. All races have their intelligent people who have made their mark in history, and then on the other hand, many closed minded, raciest people have also made their mark in history, just like Hitler, who hated blacks but also any other race that wasn't German. So I believe there should be not only a month for celebrating one's race but all year EVERY PERSON ( no matter their race) should be celebrated for their accomplishments. If it's any other way America will always be going in the wrong direction.

Halle Berry is not Black....she is Bi-racial
    • Citizen  •  3 months ago
Fan the racial fires... This would be a complete and total non-issue in a TRULY equal environment. There's still racial bias, all right, and it's mostly against the white folks & for the blacks.
