What started off as a one-off television documentary about the class system in Britain has evolved over the years into one of the great landmarks of cinema. In "7 Up," director Paul Almond selected fourteen 7-year-old children from different ends of the socio-economic spectrum and asked them about their lives and futures. Seven years later, with "Seven Plus Seven," director Michael Apted returned to interview these same 14 people, intercutting their present situation with their past fears and aspirations. Apted returned again with "21 Up", "28 Up" and so on. The result is portraits of actual lives -- with all of its longings, successes, and disappointments -- unfolding onscreen. Few cinematic projects have ever been this poignant or profound. "56 Up" is expected to come out sometime later this year or in 2012.
