Previous to his Oscar triumph, Mendes enjoyed a long and very successful career in theater, directing acclaimed and visually stunning productions of William Shakespeare's "The Tempest," Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie," and Lionel Bart's popular musical "Oliver!"
