About Parminder Nagra

With deep brown eyes and a soft affecting smile, Parminder Nagra appears at first glance to be diminutive and vulnerable. But after playing Jess, the rough and tumble young soccer player in the surprise hit "Bend It Like Beckham" (2002), Nagra has shown that she is a tough and versatile actress. Born in Leicester, England to Punjabi parents-they emigrated from India in the 1960's-Nagra spent her youth growing up like any other child: going to school, hanging out with friends and playing sports. Nagra planned on taking a year off after completing her "A" levels (the equivalent to junior college) before pursuing a dual degree in music and drama at university. However, life took one of those sudden, unexpected turns. Nagra was asked by a drama teacher to fill in for the ailing lead in a school play. She accepted and ever since, Nagra has gradually honed her exceptional talents while working in her profession, rather than studying it.

Nagra's early acting career had its ups and downs. She mainly performed on stage, with a few small television roles thrown in for good measure. Then there were times where she didn't work at all, and was forced to take temporary jobs to pay the bills. One of her first performances on the stage was in "Tainted Town" at the Haymarket Theatre. Her boss at the time, Sam Ireson, enjoyed working with the quiet and sweet young girl, but never got the impression that she would become a huge star. Nagra landed a few bit parts on British television, including "Casualty" (BBC, 1986- ) and the ill-fated "Turning World" (Channel 4, 1996). At the same time, she pursued more ambitious theatre roles, including the lead in "The Square Circle" for director Timeri Murari. The role was challenging-it demanded a wide range of emotions and performing a rape scene. But as usual, Nagra pulled it off, impressing both audiences and director alike. Nagra's big break came while performing on stage in "Sweet Casear". Director Gurinder Chadha, hot off her second independent film, "What's Cooking" (2000), was in the audience and approached Nagra with the idea of casting her in an upcoming "footballing project". Unbeknownst to Chadha, Nagra had never stepped foot onto a soccer field in her life. But two months of intense training with Simon Clifford, who taught Nagra and co-star Keira Knightley the fine art of Brazilian-style football, remedied the problem.

The success of "Bend It Like Beckham" was staggering, and surprising, most of all to Nagra, who never anticipated becoming a celebrity so quickly. She appeared next in the two-part miniseries "Second Generation" (Channel 4, 2003), about two childhood sweethearts who rekindle their former passion after years of being apart. With Nagra fast becoming a hot property, famed television producer John Wells scooped up the actress for his long-running hospital drama, "ER" (NBC, 1994- ). Nagra played Neela Rasgotra, a third-year medical student and the first of Indian-descent to star regularly on the show. She also landed the role of best friend to Anne Hathaway in the Miramax fantasy, "Ella Enchanted" (2004).
