Gregory Edward Smith
Biography
An engaging young actor who literally grew up on movie screens, Gregory Smith went from co-starring with a seal in his first feature to holding his own against award-winning veterans like Richard Dreyfuss and Mel Gibson and rising stars like Colin Farrell. A dual citizen of Canada and the USA, he began his professional career at age fourteen months when he booked a TV commercial for Tide laundry detergent. Smith moved into print modeling at age four and acting at age six, racking up guest shots on TV shows like "The Commish" and "Highlander: The Series". In 1994, he made his big screen debut in the family film "Andre", based on the true story of the friendship between a little girl and a seal. Although he acted in middling fare like "Leapin' Leprechauns!" (1995), Smith made an impression as Sport, a pal of the title character, in "Harriet the Spy" (1996) and on the small screen as a boy whose dislike for a teacher takes on mystical form in the 1997 Showtime film "Shadow Zone: My Teacher Ate My Homework". He also co-starred as one of Richard Dreyfuss' three children who disguise themselves as members of "Krippendorf's Tribe" (1998).
Although he had played a leading role in the little-seen 1998 film "Straight Through the Heart/The Climb", Smith went on to prove he could carry a feature as Alan Abernathy, a bright teen who teams up with his neighbor (Kirsten Dunst) to battle toy action figures that have run amuck in "Small Soldiers" (also 1998). The actor was next seen on the big screen as one of Mel Gibson's brood in the Revolutionary War drama "The Patriot" (2000) and then as the youngest member of the James-Younger gang in "American Outlaws" (2001). In between, Smith made his primetime series debut as a regular playing Mary Stuart Masterson's teenage son in the short-lived CBS series "Kate Brasher".
