Biography

Prior to 2010, actor Dane DeHaan was a relative unknown in Hollywood, with only minor film and television experience and an Obie Award for an off-Broadway drama as his main calling cards. But after completing a star-making turn as a gay teen on HBO's "In Treatment" (2008-2010), DeHaan found himself both in the spotlight and on the receiving end of choice roles in some of the biggest projects in the business, including the critically acclaimed vampire series "True Blood" (HBO, 2008- ) and the drama "The Wettest County in the World" (2012) opposite Shia LeBoeuf and Gary Oldman. More major film and television roles soon followed, which minted DeHaan as a star on the rise.

Born in 1987, DeHaan began making appearances in television projects like the documentary "The Doomsday Flu" (The History Channel, 1998) and shorts while still in his teens. After graduating from the North Carolina School for the Arts, he headed north to New York City, where he made his stage debut as Haley Joel Osment's understudy in a 2008 Broadway production of "American Buffalo." Roles in off-Broadway shows began dropping in his lap while he earned more substantive screen time on "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit" and in TV movies like "The Front" (Lifetime, 2010).

DeHaan's big break came with a seven-episode stint on the third season of "In Treatment." Cast as Jesse, a young gay man struggling with anger towards his adoptive family, DeHaan won praise from critics and audiences alike - most notably from the gay community - for his full-bodied performance, which depicted Jesse as both manipulative and vulnerable. His story arc came to an end when Jesse chose to side with his birth father rather than continue treatment with psychiatrist Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne). That same year, DeHaan made his feature film debut in John Sayles' "Amigo" (2011), a period drama set during the Philippine-American war in 1900, and earned an Obie Award for his turn as a teen outcast who befriended two twenty-ish slackers in the off-Broadway drama "The Aliens."

The praise that followed DeHaan's performances on "In Treatment" and in "The Aliens" gave his profile a considerable boost, making him an actor to watch in numerous media profiles. It also improved the material offered to him, and by mid-2011, he was announced as a recurring character - a teenager named Timbo who came under the care of Ryan Kwanten's Jason - on "True Blood" (HBO, 2008- ). That same year, DeHaan was cast as Shia LeBoeuf's best friend in "The Wettest County in the World" (2012), a period drama about bootleggers, and completed a supporting role in "Jack and Diane" (2011), a horror film with lesbian overtones about werewolves. His incredible year was rounded out by a leading role in the fantasy "Chronicle" (2012), about teen superheroes.
