Whitney Houston Open Casket Photo Graces National Enquirer Cover

In a classy move certain to enrage fans while boosting sales, the National Enquirer has published a photo of Whitney Houston's open casket this week.

The image of the late pop diva was purportedly taken during a private viewing at the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, N.J.

The exercise in sensationalism is on par with the photos of Houston's last meal and the bathtub she died in that TMZ ran in the days immediately after her Feb. 11 death at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

There's some precedent for the Enquirer's ghoulish glimpse at Whitney's wake. The tabloid ran similar open casket shots of Elvis Presley after the King of Rock died in 1977.

Just as it did with Presley, the headline loudly proclaims that it is "the last photo" taken of the singer.

The Enquirer also teases some other tawdry details about the Houston viewing. The singer was reportedly outfitted in her favorite purple dress, $500,000 worth of jewelry, and had gold slippers on her feet.

Most of the people wanted to go to the funeral so if we went to the funeral what would we have seen? Whitney in a coffin sooooooo!!!! its all a part of life we all have to go out this same route. I wish people would just grow up, and remember there's different strokes for different folks some folks wanted to see it some didn't. Don't be so judge mental!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is just as gone..was just as talented..is just as mourned by her family..and would have been just as stalked by a bunch of glory seeking blood sucking leeches like the people who lived off of her misery..I for one loved her music. It came from her soul before the fame.

It's such a shame that some people are looking to make money with someone else's grief. We all have to travel this very same road some day, shouldn't it be a celebration? This is a very disheartening photo that needs to be laid to rest. RIP songbird!! Continue singing for the angels.

Tina Atkins, you are right, it's sad, I know Whitney has rolled over 100 times or more, before she was even put in the ground. RIP (Whitney)

In order for this picture(if it really her) to get out someone in her ranks had to release(sell) it. I thought the same thing about pic's of inside the repass on some entertainment show last night. I am wondering, if this was private who took these pic's. It is really sad and low down of whoever is doing it but you know it has to be an insider.

Oh hell, you know someone in the family sold this to the enquirer. They are cashing in and who cares? She looks good. Everyone wanted to see this photo anyway.

I don't think we needed to see it as the family's wishes were not taken into consideration. If the Houston clan had wanted a public viewing they would have opened the casket and invited CNN, FOX, ETC.

It was was who works at the funeral home, not the family
      • TonyaB 3 months ago
It had to be someone who worked at the funeral home cuz it was a private veiwing... Where are all the others? Exactly it was before anyone else got there!

Everybody is blaming the magazine and the person who took and sold the photos. Yet I don't hear anyone blaming the millions of people that are going to buy this magazine. If our society wasn't so obsessed with celebrities, this kind of thing wouldn't happen. Put the blame where it belongs. If there wasn't a DEMAND for this, nobody would supply it. Simple economics.
