It's taken their entire careers to properly team up, but Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger aren't exactly hogging all the star power in "The Tomb." The film, which began production about two weeks ago, recently added Sam Neill to its ranks. Neill will join a cast that also includes Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Jim Caviezel, Amy Ryan, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Vinnie Jones.
The director of "The Rite," Mikael Hafstrom, is helming "The Tomb," which finds Stallone playing an expert on "structural security" who gets framed and ends up in a jail designed according to his own protocols. On the inside, Stallone teams with Schwarzenegger, another convict, with "shades of grey." They'll be clashing with Caviezel and Jones, who play the warden and a guard, respectively.
Stallone is no stranger to prison films and jerky wardens, having starred in "Lock-Up" 25 years ago, where he clashed with Donald Sutherland. This time, he'll have assistance from Schwarzenegger, a man he once counted as a rival. Actually, that might be putting it mildly; Stallone recently admitted they were more akin to enemies who "couldn't stand to be in the same room."
That changed over the years. Stallone claimed the animosity began to melt away earlier in the decade. The two briefly shared the screen two years ago in "The Expendables," and Schwarzenegger has returned to feature in that film's sequel, which will bow later this year. '80s action fans once salivated over this prospect, and it is perhaps a shame they never got to see these two team up in their heyday.
However, the two seem to be making up for lost time with "The Expendables" films and "The Tomb." If these prove to be successful, perhaps we'll see more featuring these two in the future. Better late than never, right?
