There are several movie events taking place in and around Victoria, British Columbia, the week of December 6th to the 12th. The Eric Martin Theatre on Fort St. will be inviting members of the community to their weekly Monday movie event. This Monday, December 6th the musical influenced film "Shining Path" will be shown at 6:30pm. This film focuses on family separation and Tibetan culture, which is unified through music and technology. This event is open to the public and a warm welcome is extended to those who use mental health services throughout the city.
This week at the University of Victoria's cinema, Cinecenta, there will be a special showing of "Force of Nature" Monday, December 6th. In this ninety minute cinematic event, Dr. David Suzuki talks about his involvement with colleagues and his interactions with important life events in the realm of conservation and biology. This is a one time showing only! Also, Cinecenta will be showing "Persepolis" from Director Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paonnaud (December 7th). This show is animated and the film covers the political difficulties of living in a socially divided Iran. This is a special presentation by the Middle East Islamic Consortium of BC. And the pseudo-documentary "Catfish" will show Wednesday December 8th and Thursday, December 9th. This is a picture from writer Nev Schulman, which shows how the internet creates easy access to technology savvy youth. This is an eye-opening and very relevant piece. Do not miss it.
Later in the week, Cinecenta will host Ben Affleck's gritty crime styled thriller "The Town" on both the 10th and 11th. This picture has already won an award for Best Ensemble Cast at the National Board of Review and this is a thrilling look at Charlestown's violent underworld of robbery and extortion. Remember, UVic card carrying students can see these and other features for $2.75 (showings after 9:00pm).
The Imax Theatre on Belleville St. will be hosting "Legends of Flight: The Next Generation" from Monday, December 6th until the 12th. Over a hundred years of aviation will be documented in this film, with a focus on the trials and errors of this imperfect science. Also showing the week of the 6th to the 12th is "Van Gogh: Brush with Genius." The show starts on this stellar Imax feature at 11:00am all seven days. Van Gogh's nine year painting career will be covered, along with a look at some of the 900 paintings he created in his short career. Also note that there are special group rates for schools every Monday before 12:00pm!
