'Seinfeld' Actor In Critical Condition After Self-Inflicted Gunshot to the Head

Seinfeld actor Daniel von Bargen is in critical condition after surviving a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Following his failed suicide attempt, Von Bargen dialed 911 and told the operator, “I’ve shot myself in the head… and I need help.” Listen to the tape via TMZ. Warning: audio clip contains graphic details.

“I shot in my temple,” he said.

Asked whether the incident was accidental, the actor responded that he “was supposed to go to the hospital” but “didn’t want to.” He went on to explain that he suffers from diabetes and that, “They were supposed to amputate at least a few toes.”

Police were dispatched to Von Bargen’s Cincinnati apartment, after which he was transported to a nearby hospital.

Von Bargen played Mr. Kruger on Seinfeld and Chief Grady in Super Troopers. He most recently starred in the 2009 comedy London Betty and appeared on Law & Order in 2004.

This happened a few weeks ago, though sad nonetheless. He had already had a leg amputated and was going to lose more on the other foot. A good man, a good actor. My heart goes out to him and hope he is able to find stability in his life through family, friends, and his faith. Take care, good friend.

Poor man. Listening to the 911 tape just broke my heart. He'd already lost one leg, and he said they were going to "start on" the other. He said he was "just tired." The 911 dispatcher was so kind to him and kept him calm.

I hope he'll be okay. Praying for him.

so sad...I really enjoyed his character on sienfeld...it's a hard job at 9-11...you want to be sympathetic but you cant' help but use the wrong phrase once in a while...at one point on the tape the operator asks the name of his sister and says "just off the top of your head" and at another point says to "not go anywhere"...

Didn't know him in Seinfeld, but seen him on Super Troopers, and notoriously, in "Malcolm In The Middle.... Definitely didn't know he lived in Cincy.... I was just downtown, and didn't hear anything on the news.... :(

It's hard when life becomes unbearable, and it's a nightmare when you finally get up the wherewithall to end it and you fail. I went through it, I really feel his pain. I hope that now the people in his life will come around him and support him, give him lots of love and maybe he'll be able to see a reason to keep fighting..

It is so sad that this happens, we must be alert about our friends around us screaming for help and make sure that they are being supported. It makes so much difference in our lives a simple smile, a "good morning" a phone call showing you care: This world is becoming so technologically automated and people still need communication - friendship and love is crucial to any human being - I sure hope and pray he recovers.

We all need to ask ourselves, when we talk with others, are we talking about ourselves and our problems or are we listening when others need us? Listening goes a long way toward healing.

I recently had the opportunity to hear Roger Cartwright speak. He was born with no hands and in-turned feet but was able to play football, become a tennis star and a coach. One of the questions he asked his audience to reflect upon regarding their own disability or impairment was to as "Where are you coming from? Then follow that with Where are you hoping/wanting to go?
This will take some self reflection to answer.

I know it's tough to live with chronic and serious health issues, and I can see why he might have just given up. I hope he pulls through and can get some help in his emotional ability to handle the health issues.

This may bring a few bad responses, but oh well, it's what I believe. I believe Dr. Kevorkian was onto something. Why should people's dignity be put on the back burner for the law? When someone is mentally fit and the physical pain is too much to bear, assisted suicide should be an option. I do believe in God, and the word "suicide" is not in the Bible. Watching someone suffer from cancer or aids is a pain within itself.

Kevorkian did it for people dying of ALS or similar diseases..not someone who just didn't want to deal with having a couple of toes amputated..NOT THE SAME thing. The guy needs counseling..not a bullet through his head.

I agree Sarah, I watched my Mom in Law suffer with bone and lung cancer, and she suffered so bad, she prayed to die, that's the people I was speaking of. Your point was well taken, thank you.

I have Type 1 with nerve damage in feet and legs. It's not as easy to control as some people think. I am 5'8" tall and weigh 165 pounds, so it's not ALWAYS the weight. Good luck to this gentleman, I hope everything turns in the right direction for him. God Bless.

I agree, Im 32 and have had type 1 since I was 6 years old. Its not easy to control. And now Im starting to get the nerve damage as well along with other problems. It definitely is not anything to be taken lightly.

As a survivor of a traumatic brain injury and a type 2 diabetic, I can't imagine anyone wanting to put a bullet in their head. This man needs to heavy duty counseling.

You are not Dan and have not "walked in his shoes" so to speak. He is an artist and lived for his craft. His body was his "instrument" and , because of other things in his personal life which I shall not mention here because they are nobody's business but his own, he feels like there is no where left to turn. He has already lost one leg to Diabetes and the other one was beginning to show signs of going "piece by piece" . His career is everything to him and his "everything" is ebbing away. Never presume that you know how another person feels . Even I do not claim to know the inner workings of Dan's mind and I do know him. Heavy counseling works for many but not for all. "Judge not lest ye be judged." A little compassion here please for a man who's talent on the television screen the movie screen and on the theater stage has brought pleasure to vast amounts of people. I am happy for you that you have survived your brain injury and your Diabetes which I also have but You have no idea the intensity of his problems so please, rather than claim that you would never do such a thing, Step back and realize that you are not Dan and you do not know all. Best of luck to you LM Kelly.
