Russo Brothers Sign First-Look Deal with Sony
“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo have signed a three-year first-look features deal with Sony Pictures, beginning in April.
The siblings will next direct Disney-Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War.” That film will include Sony’s new Spider-Man character as part of the Feb. 9 deal between Sony and Marvel.
It’s the first time that the Russos have signed a first-look pact with a studio.
“We’re thrilled to make a home at Sony Pictures, and to be partnering with the entire team,” they said in a statement. “The studio has created an environment that is not only collaborative, but truly filmmaker-friendly, and we’re excited to begin developing both new and ambitious material with them.”
In addition to last year’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” the Russos also directed the Owen Wilson comedy “You, Me and Dupree” and won an Emmy for directing the pilot of “Arrested Development.”
They are also attached to direct “The Grey Man,” adapted from Mark Greaney’s novel with Joe Roth and Palak Patel on board to produce for Sony.
Doug Belgrad, president of Sony Motion Picture Group said, “Joe and Anthony Russo are terrifically exciting filmmakers with a sensibility that matches the tastes of audiences worldwide.”
The deal with the brothers was announced less than a week after Sony signed Josh Bratman and his Immersive Pictures to a first-look pact. The studio has first-looks with more than two dozen producers, including Neal Moritz, Scott Rudin and Will Smith.
The Russo brothers are represented by WME and by attorney Karl Austen.
