Aardman Studios is known for successful films like "Chicken Run" and "Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit." Fans of those animated movies were very excited when the first trailers for "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" hit theater screens. Did the movie meet the expectations of fans and critics?
Reviewers found the movie very entertaining. Newsday's Rafar Guzman reported, "You may laugh more than the child who brought you to 'The Pirates! Band of Misfits.' [It is] a subtly screwball animated comedy with a distinctively British wit."
Richard Corliss of TIME Magazine wrote, "The movie ... is cheerful entertainment, suitable for kids and parents of the brighter stripe." Nell Minow of the Chicago Sun-Times called "The Pirates!" "Another deliriously silly stop-motion animation delight from Aardman filled with giddy pleasures and witty details."
Some critics didn't connect with the film, though. Roger Moore of McClatchy-Tribune News Service declared, "'Pirates' plays like a fussy film made by fussy little fussbudgets, clever chaps all wrapped up with making perfect Plasticine trees, but who lose track of the forest -- the funny movie that is supposed to be animated around all this detail."
The Newark Star-Ledger's Stephen Whitty said, "The filmmakers have said they are already dreaming up a sequel. They needn't hurry. Whatever treasures these pirates have are well buried." Jody Mitori of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch related, "This pirate tale is a misguided adventure that doesn't fully set sail."
Viewers on Rotten Tomatoes were generally positive. Jacob L. stated, "This was a very interesting movie; while it is more [for] children, it did have a lot of adult humor. I loved it. This is the kind of movie you can watch over and over again. It is fun for the whole family."
Angela G. related, "Great film. [It] has more jokes in it than the whole 'Shrek' series combined." Tyler Y. proclaimed, "[This is the] best movie of the year! Aardman has done it again. Edgier than 'Wallace and Gromit,' yet still has the same British charm."
There were a few moviegoers who were disappointed, however. Jessica H.complained, "I love a great animated flick, but this fell short by a lot. Some cute moments, but the script and plot felt lacking."
Jimmie C. said, "I can't understand the high ratings for this. Boring movie!! [I] couldn't understand some of the talking. [It was] just not good." Jakki J. stated, "The overarching storyline was pretty lame. The first half started out strong [and] the animation was top notch, but things started to fall apart."
Peter Lord directed "The Pirates! Band of Misfits." It's voiced by Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ashley Jensen, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Lenny Henry, Imelda Staunton, and Brian Blessed. The movie is rated PG for mild action, rude humor, and some language.
