Netflix Streams Full HD to New Google Tablet, But Still No High-Def on Apple Devices

Netflix has developed a new version of its Android app that delivers 1080p HD video for select titles — compatible with Google’s new next-gen Nexus 7 tablet with a higher-resolution screen — while the Internet streaming provider currently does not provide HD video on Apple iOS devices.

Google’s new Nexus 7 is the first tablet that supports Netflix’s new app, which runs on Android version 4.3 and is available in the Google Play Store. Netflix said the app will support additional devices later this year.

As for when Netflix will provide HD support for Apple iPad and iPhone devices, the company is not providing a timetable. “We are always working to deliver the best experience but can’t discuss details about HD on iOS at this time,” Netflix spokesman Joris Evers said.

Previously, Netflix offered some “one-off implementations” for HD streaming on a few Android tablets, and now there’s a standardized way the streamer will deliver that, according to Evers.

Google’s Nexus 7, manufactured by ASUS, provides the same 7-inch display size as the first-generation tablet introduced a year ago but increases resolution from 1280-by-800 to true 1080 p HD with 1920 by 1200 pixels. The tablet is the world’s highest-resolution 7-inch tablet, according to Google, providing 323 pixels per inch.

The Nexus 7 will be available starting next Tuesday, July 30, in three versions: a 16-gigabyte Wi-Fi model for $229; a 32-GB Wi-Fi model for $269; and 32-GB model with Wi-Fi and 4G LTE compatible with AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile for $349.
