Every week, ETonline selects a scene that is so magical, it demands watching, and re-watching, from fans and non-fans alike. This week, that honor goes to The Walking Dead!
All season long, members of the press have received advance screeners for every episode of The Walking Dead ... until this week, which left me concerned for the fate of every character on the show. But at no point could I have guessed what the episode -- titled This Sorrowful Life -- had in store for us. Or The Dixon brothers.
I am not going to pretend to like Merle. Heck, I've been praying for his death since the one-armed man rejoined his brother at Rick's prison of pain. But something odd happened over the course of last night's episode, Merle actually redeemed himself!
OK, sure, his redemption came only after he kidnapped Michonne with the intention of turning her over to The Governor, but during their long and winding trip to Woodbury, our sword-wielding woman of the hour got under Merle's skin and resurrected his morality.
So Michonne was freed as Merle rounded up a horde of walkers to storm The Governor's castle, and he used the distraction to take out a dozen of Woodbury's finest. But his cover was quickly blown and after a bloody showdown with his former boss, Merle lost two fingers and his life.
All the while, Daryl was hot on his brothers trail but couldn't handle the horror of their reunion which revealed a zombie-fied Merle and forced Daryl to put him down once and for all. Therein lies the power of The Walking Dead -- the show gave me exactly what I'd been wishing for, but instantly made me regret ever hoping for Merle's death because it came at such a steep price for Daryl.
The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on AMC.
