Mondo Guerra Recaps 'Project Runway: All Stars': It's Not Easy Being Green

[Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen Thursday's episode.]

The all-stars go green this week creating eco-friendly looks for the red carpet using AirDye fabrics and recycled trims from previous challenges. As an added bonus, host Carolyn Murphy will wear the winning design at her next red carpet event.

The legendary Diane von Furstenburg joins the judges’ panel this week and one designer wants nothing more than to impress her. Meanwhile, other designers fight with materials and time.

    In the Workroom

The designers meet Carolyn at the High Line—a public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side—where they get the challenge and choose their AirDye fabrics.

Back in the workroom, Emilio and Casanova talk shop and gossip about the other designers in Spanish. Their secrets are safe—until subtitles reveal their true colors!

At another workstation, Laura Kathleen tries to impress her idol, DVF, by taking a risk with an unexpected silhouette for the red carpet. But will it pay off?

Across the workroom, Ivy challenges herself with an ambitious design but struggles with the execution. Althea is having her own problems elevating her subtle print and color. Thankfully, Casanova lightens the mood with his smelly armpits.

    On the Runway

Joshua: I think he was going for a Grecian drape, but there wasn’t enough volume to accommodate the silhouette. The point of interest was the belt. Other than that, it was kind of boring.

Uli: I liked this dress and appreciated that she went for a cocktail length. But it’s time for her to step away from the trim.

Althea: It looks like a piece of chewed gum. What red carpet is she going to?

Casanova: This look was one of my favorites. I liked the silhouette of this gown, the neckline and the use of his print.

Anthony Ryan: I couldn’t stop thinking that it looked exactly like a Michael Costello dress. It totally looked like it!

Ivy: Ooh, Ivy. The sun has set. I think the idea was really good and think she could have pulled it off if she had more time. But I think she bit off more than she could chew and through the execution, it showed.

Laura Kathleen: I liked her fresh take on a red carpet look and it paid off. Although we’ve seen similar silhouettes from her recently, Laura Kathleen’s design stood out from the rest tonight.

Emilio: I was confused. I don’t know if it was over-designed, under-designed or just safe. It was unfinished and unfortunate.

    The Judges’ Decisions

In the end, Laura Kathleen’s risk paid off, earning her the win, while Althea’s experiment-gone-wrong sent her home.
