Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts to Star in 'August: Osage County'

Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts have signed on to star in The Weinstein Company's film adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play "August: Osage County," the company said Wednesday.

John Wells, the "E.R." creator, will direct the darkly comic movie based on Tracy Letts' play.

The casting has been a long time coming: Published reports as far back as 2010 had the two Oscar-winners in talks for the picture.

"August: Osage County" is the story of the women of the Weston family, who have grown apart from one another, but return to their house in the Midwest after a family crisis.

Streep will play Violet Weston, the dysfunctional matriarch. Roberts will play her adult daughter, Barbara.

“After seeing Meryl Streep's mesmerizing portrayal as Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady,' it has me even more excited and proud to co star with her," Roberts said in a statement.

OK, I know I'm half blind, but where are you people getting the word "orange" from? I don't see it in the article at all. It says "August: Osage County,"

I think Julia Roberts is a great actress but Meryl Streep is absolutely fantastic in EVERY role she plays. She is so versatile and becomes her character so completely you don't see her at all. I can't wait for this movie. :)

I've also seen this play and I agree, Streep will be amazing, just like always.

And it'll force Roberts to elevate her acting, instead of the usual "Miss Vivian" in a different set of circumstances.

I like both of them regardless. They are entertaining. Isn't entertainment the whole point of a movie anyway?

Does "The Weinstein Company" produce EVERY Hollywood movie? It seems that at every award show, every winner is always thanking Harvey Weinstein. The guy must have a huge checkbook.

This may be mildly interesting, but hardly headline-worthy.

The action takes place over the course of several weeks in August inside the three-story home of Beverly and Violet Weston outside Pawhuska, Oklahoma, Osage County. NOT ORANGE COUNTY!

        where does it say Orange?
      • Commonsenseuno 3 months ago
It doesn't. Other blog comments questioned the location and some thought it was supposed to be Orange County, California.

However, there is a type of tree/bush called the "Osage Orange."
