Renowned writer Stephen King is known for his award-winning works in the horror, fantasy, science fiction, drama, gothic, and thriller genres. Through the years, many of these literary pieces have already been turned into commercially successful and critically acclaimed motion picture projects. Some of the most memorable horror films adapted from his works include "The Shining," "Misery," "The Mist," and "1408."
"The Shining" (1980)
The psychological horror classic "The Shining" is based on the King novel of the same title. This Stanley Kubrick film features the story of a disturbed writer hired as an off-season hotel caretaker. This work requires him to live in a mysterious and isolated area with his dedicated wife and gifted son, who is struggling with his psychic abilities. In the middle of the freezing winter, the head of the household imbibes the supernatural presence seemingly looming over the haunted hotel. He turns mad to the point of trying to murder his wife and son.
"Misery" (1990)
Borrowed from King's novel of the same title, "Misery" depicts the story of a famous novelist who is trapped in the middle of a freak blizzard. He is rescued from a car crash by an obsessed fan who turns out to be a psychopath. The further misery of the award-winning author continues when she takes him to her remote house in the mountains. This film masterfully combines the drama, thriller, and horror genres to create a menacing atmosphere, which is aptly described by its title.
"The Mist" (2007)
Based on King's short novella also titled "The Mist," this adaptation features a menacing story set during a weird storm which unleashes a series of bloodthirsty creatures in a small town. The presence of the unnatural mist brings a variety of mutated insects and terrifying beasts. This supernatural occurrence becomes a sinister cue, readily enveloping the surroundings with horrifying demise. As a suspense and monster piece, the film incorporates survival instincts with religious paranoia and self-preservation as the characters fight for their lives in the midst of the evil mist.
