Madonna Slams M.I.A.'s Middle Finger Stunt at Super Bowl

Sounds like M.I.A. made a very powerful enemy in Madonna.

Backing up the pop legend alongside Nicki Minaj at last Sunday's Super Bowl halftime show, the British/Sri Lankan rapper nearly hijacked the spectacle when she flipped her middle finger; the obscene gesture aired on live TV as over 100 million viewers watched.

But this wasn't a provocative move planned in advance with Madonna a la her infamous VMAs kiss with Britney Spears. "I was really surprised. I didn't know anything about it," Madonna, 53, told Ryan Seacrest Friday during a radio chat for On Air With Ryan Seacrest. "I wasn't happy about it."

PHOTOS: How Madonna's face has changed

Explained the singer, who invited M.I.A. (real name: Mathangi Arulpragasamand) and Minaj to perform on "Gimme All Your Luvin'," the lead single off her album MDNA: "I understand it's punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy, and positivity it seemed negative."

"It's such a teenager…irrelevant thing to do," she sniped. "There was such a feeling of love and unity there. What was the point? It was just out of place."

PHOTOS: What's Madonna's best look of all time?

Besides, Madonna was nervous enough for her big moment without M.I.A.'s unexpected gesture. Her most stressful moments? "When my throne docked on the stage," she said of her dramatic entrance.  "Then getting my cartwheels on the bleachers right."

By the time the 12-minute set concluded with "Like a Prayer" (with Cee Lo Green singing alongside her), "I was overwhelmed," she said. "I started crying. I felt an incredible sense of warmth, love, and support. To see an entire stadium light up like candles it was…like a religious experience."

perhaps if MIA was held accountable for her actions in a way that would really hurt--say an enormous fine and community service perhaps that would send the appropriate message instead of giving her all of this publicity. i know--what a radical idea--being held accountable for your own actions!

you know, I think that is a great idea. Make her be held accountable for her own actions. Great idea

Yeah, if people were chastised for doing stupid things instead of being worshipped, then Im sure we wouldnt have the problems in society as we do. Youre very right.

Yes Madonna has had her moments as well, but she also promised that this was going to be a "family friendly" show, she was nice enough to invite M.I.A. to perform, and then M.I.A. pulled this mess. I'd be mad too if I were Madonna.

I would be too, that was completely rude what M.I.A. did.

Unless you do it, there is no way you could understand it. get some maturity - it will go a long way to make you less of a nimrod

'been there, done that" is more appropriate for her to say.

Is Madonna serious? Is she that old that she has forgotten about all the crazy things she did back in the day? Suggestive videos, random men, and lots of controversy...it's how she made a name for herself....The denouncement MIA's stunt is PR at it's best... go sell it to someone else...

Umm does anyone remember the SEX book Madonna put out all those years ago? Not to mention all the girl-girl kisses on awards shows, and all the other crap she has done for publicity. Beyond distasteful. You got it right Charity, she' a HUGE hypocrite.

MIA should keep her trashy self in Europe....and if Madonna wants to dis the USA, talk and act like a Brit she can stay there also! After all she loathes America....
    • sainthia  •  3 months ago
When you take a look at this situation, it really was not neccessary for MIA to flip her finger!! kids and EVERYONE were watching this game and the show.. she needs some class. Period.

Coming from the queen of "teenager, irrelevant, pointless and out of place" things to do. Gee, Madge, did you forget how you started out? Does the book "Sex" ring a bell?

Madonna does not strike me in any way as being prejudice so I must agree that doing this was out of place and definitely understand her not liking her show upstaged by someone she allowed to perform with her.

At the same time I do not understand why people are upset about a middle finger when they let their children play with bloody video games and watch bloody gory movies? Anyone want to explain this to me feel free to do so intelligently.

Madonna is a hypocrite after all SHE has done to offend America with her nasty videos and lifestyle choices.

Am I the only one who didnt noticed M.I.A pull the middle finger? Its not really a big deal to me.

This is tame compared to some of the stuff Madonna did at her age.

Would be good if she actually sang a bit too instead of just lip singing every single song. Ridiculous. If you can't sing, don't bother going on stage.

    • Stace  •  3 months ago
MIA had to do something to get herself back in the news...she hasn't had a "hit" in what...5 years...what an idiot.
    • merci  •  3 months ago
MIA would not do that in UK. Take her visa away from her.

She's ghetto. do not hire her anymore. That's should teach her a lesson. She's not that great anyways. What a ROLE model.
