Madonna: Not happy about M.I.A.'s gesture

NEW YORK (AP) — The British hip-hop artist M.I.A. has apologized to Madonna for making an obscene gesture during the Super Bowl halftime show, Madonna's spokeswoman said.

Madonna said in radio interviews on Friday that she had no idea M.I.A. would extend her middle finger during the performance in front of 114 million people, according to Madonna's spokeswoman, Liz Rosenberg. The singer didn't find out about it until after the show.

"I wasn't happy about it," Madonna told Ryan Seacrest in one interview. "I understand it's kind of punk rock and everything, but to me there was such a feeling of love and good energy and positivity, it seemed negative."

She said it was like something a teenager would do.

"It seemed out of place," she said.

Madonna forgave her, and thought M.I.A. just got caught up in the moment, Rosenberg said. Madonna said she remains a fan of the "Paper Planes" rapper and said she doesn't want it to spoil what was one of the biggest moments in Madonna's life.

MIA got what she wanted...before the SuperBowl no one knew who she was. Now, everyone does. Can't buy publicity like that. Bad publicity is still that. Publicity. Note to the networks: if you don't want to have to apologize to the country, don't hire sub-par "artists" who are desperate to advance their careers at any cost.

I still don't know who that is...

Hmm "no-one knew who she was? Let's see: Only artist in history to be nominated for an Academy, Grammy Brit and Turner award. First album no 3 on billboard charts. Listed by Esquire as one of this century's most influential people. Listed by Time magazine the same. Listed by Rolling Stone as one of the defining artists of the decade. You're showing your age and possibly your ignorance with your clueless comments.

everything you said makes sense except the US part....it was inappropriate regardless of country. Don't make out there is a higher moral code in the US, need I remind you that your country glorifies Snooki and The Kardashians.

LOL! Offended? This woman has thrived on irritating everyone her whole life, her brother even wrote a book including just how selfish and messed up she is how she treats people. But she's offended? Give it a rest Madge and please go back to England where you once called "home".
      • SylvesterAteTweety 3 months ago
England never wanted her which is why Guy was only given one invite to the Royal wedding ... to make sure Madge didn't accompany him.

Too bad Madonna didn't point out the real reason why people are pretending to be offended.

Interesting how having couches made out of women in bikinis is "family friendly".

I thought it was a stupid non called for jesture, I'd be unhappy with it also if I were Madonna. No need for that crap on super bowl which aired over one hundred million viewers.

Never thought I'd see the day when Madonna would even give a s**t. 25 years ago, SHE would have been the one flippin' the bird.

What's really odd to me is that I was watching the halftime show and I heard her slip in a profane word but I didn't even see the "flip off" until the media started calling attention to it.......

"Caught up in the moment" my a**!!! M.I.A. planned this out just to get publicity, and I wouldn't be surprised if Madonna was in on it. Who is M.I.A. anyway, never heard of her before this.

I can understand why Madonna is angry. You don't invite someone to sit at the adult table and expect them to act like a child. Sadly, they often disappoint you. Unfortunately it seems as if no one even noticed her little fit of immaturity & childish behavior until the network itself in an apparent attempt to CYA brought it to everyone's attention. With no significant complaints and apparently the FCC not even noticing it, they should have let it and this little wannabe fade away.

m.i.a.is just a wanna be diva!! she thought that would make her cool singing with madonna and put her little twist in. she wanted it to be remembered like janet jackson's "little" peep show, using her finger instead of her boobs.
