Open Road Films has picked up U.S. rights to "Machete Kills," the latest installment in Robert Rodriguez franchise about lusty women and the knife-wielding vigilante who fascinates them.
The film will have a wide release in 2013. Danny Trejo will once again get to indulge his love of sharp objects as Machete. The sequel also boasts a grab bag of disgraced Hollywood stars like Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen, along with some pretty inspired stunt casting in the form of Lady Gaga and Cuba Gooding Jr.
In "Machete Kills," Trejo's ex-Federale agent is recruited by the president to slice and dice his way to a confrontation with a mad revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who have a plan to spark a global catastrophe.
Released in 2010, the first "Machete" racked up $44 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, a nifty demonstration of the grind house economics that give Rodriguez free rein to indulge his quirks as long as he keeps costs low.
