Leading a double life was an easy task for Ryan Gosling, whose "Drive" character moonlights as the getaway driver for heists. Honest day jobs as a mechanic and stuntman have not only provided the skills to perform his dirty work at night but also help him maintain a normal and low-key lifestyle. Known and simply addressed as "Driver" in this film, Gosling's secret world becomes more dangerous after he gets romantically involved with his neighbor.
The struggles this character goes through marks one example of how relationships in film cause difficulty for criminals to separate their illegal dealings from the drama-free existence they are trying to keep intact.
Stony, played by Jada Pinkett in "Set It Off," knew about leading double lives all too well after she got involved with a successful banker named Keith while robbing banks with her friends. A devoted and smitten Keith was completely oblivious to Stony's secret identity until an FBI investigation placed his bank on notice regarding area heists. He didn't even know her real name until the end of this movie was approaching.
Between the first-class nights out on the town with Keith, her janitorial job in a fancy office building, and the bank robberies, Stony appeared to have her double life under control. Unfortunately, she had to pay a tough price of choosing between her friends' greed and the potential for love in her quest to escape poverty to find happiness.
Ben Affleck somehow found a way to develop his own hybrid of witness protection and stalking as Doug in "The Town." What started as an attempt to make sure the victim during one of his gang's bank robberies was not talking to the cops later developed into one intense relationship that had him questioning his own criminal acts and rethinking the future. Too bad for Doug: The romance he built on lies was jeopardized by everyone around him. While he could probably handle the jealous ex-girlfriend and a friend who feels betrayed after learning about his plans to leave the crime behind, Doug still could not keep the FBI from exposing him to the new target-turned-love of his life.
