Following its record-setting release abroad, superhero film Marvel's Iron Man 3 opened to gargantuan numbers in its opening weekend in the U.S.
The film, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular character, opened domestically with $175.3 million, making it the second-best opening weekend in history, trailing only fellow Marvel film The Avengers ($207.4 million).
The concluding film of the Harry Potter series previously held the No. 2 opening-weekend position with $169.2 million.
After two weeks in international release, Iron Man 3 has already trumped the box office total of the preceding films in the franchise, raking it a whopping estimated $680 million worldwide.
The film's massive domestic opening exceeded the cumulative totals of all but one film (Oz the Great and Powerful: $228.6 million) in the box office Top 10.
Although Iron Man 3 overshadowed the rest of the box office, films Pain & Gain ($7.6 million, $33.9 million), 42 ($6.2 million, $78.3 million), and Oblivion ($5.8 million, $76 million) all posted steady figures.
