    Independent Box Office: 'The Gatekeepers' Averages $22K Per Screen

    The Oscar-nominated documentary "The Gatekeepers" rolled to an impressive $22,226 per-screen average on three screens over the weekend. 

    Director Dror Moreh's film tells the story of the Israel's Shin Bet, from the perspective of six former heads of Israel's secret service. The Sony Pictures Classics release took in $66,677 over the weekend. With its Oscar qualifying run added in, its overall total is $86,015.

    "Koch," Neil Barsky's documentary about Edward Koch, debuted on the same day the former mayor of New York died and took in $40,000 from two New York theaters for Zeitgeist Films.

    Dave Grohl's "Sound City,' about this history of the L.A. recording studio, grossed $70,000 in its first three days on 16 screens for Variance Films. That's about $4,376 per screen, but doesn't tell the whole story. It also debuted at the same time online, and is ninth on the iTunes sales list and tops all documentaries.

    "2013 Oscar Shorts," the collection of the Academy Awards finalists released by Magnolia and Shorts HD, brought in $390.000 from 105 theaters, a $3,714 per-screen average.
