When Disney and Lucasfilm broke the announcement that they will produce "Star Wars: Episode VII," many fans quickly turned their attention to the status of the cast from the original trilogy. Mark Hamill was quick to note that George Lucas had reached out to him and Carrie Fisher over the summer, but Harrison Ford was conspicuous by his absence. However, EW is reporting that Ford might be interested in returning for the upcoming sequel.
Citing a "highly placed source," the EW report indicates that Ford " is open to the idea of doing the movie and he's upbeat about it." In fact, "all three of them are," the source insists, referring also to Hamill and Fisher.
There had been some early speculation that Ford might not be very interested in reprising the role that helped launched him to star fame. Most have pointed to his somewhat prickly attitude towards the role in the past.
As recently as 2010, a "frosty" Ford revealed that "as a character, [Solo] was not so interesting," and, as far back as the early 80s, he was lobbying for Lucas to kill the character off. At one point, Han was scheduled to become one with the Force in "Return of the Jedi," but Lucas nixed the idea early on, a move that could prove to be useful if Ford can be coaxed back to the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon alongside Chewbacca.
Ford's post-"Star Wars" superstar status compared to his co-stars has also led many to assume he wouldn't return; while Hamill and Fisher have since carved out nice niches for themselves, Ford went on to become one of the most popular movie stars of all time.
Perhaps he's softened in his old age, though; after all, his beef certainly isn't with Lucas, as he returned to play Indiana Jones a few years ago, so there's hope yet that he might also return to " Star Wars ."
That decision is still likely a little ways off. Lucasfilm and Disney are still searching for a writer and a director, but one would also assume that they need to lock Ford's status into place so Han's fate can be determined.
