When people think of Halloween movies, horror flicks immediately come to mind. However, Halloween is a children's holiday and, while "Saw" and "Paranormal Activity" provide lots of scares to the big kids, there are also options for the younger ones. Halloween offers kids a time to dress up and go trick or treating. There are plenty of movies available that are appropriate for the young Halloween fans in the household as well.
"Wallace & Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit"
Aardman Studios does not maintain a high output of films, due mostly to its niche: stop-motion claymation work. One movie can take years to complete, but when Aardman releases a movie, it almost always earns high marks in animation alongside similar products by Pixar and Studio Ghibli. "Wallace & Gromit and the Curse of the Were-Rabbit" is the company's masterpiece, winning the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film in 2006.
Wallace and Gromit, a lovable British man and his loyal dog, work as a pest control outfit as their neighborhood heads into the annual Giant Vegetable Competition. When Wallace messes with mind control, he releases a monster known as the were-rabbit and no one's vegetables are safe. The movie is easily family-friendly, has a strong and witty story for adults, and minor scares that will excite little kids.
"It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"
There is little room to go wrong when searching for Halloween-themed movies for kids if you choose the Peanuts gang. "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" brings Linus's great infatuation to life as he spends every October waiting in the pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin to rise out and deliver toys to all the good girls and boys. The short movie also features Charlie Brown getting an invitation to his first ever party and the kids head out trick or treating. The movie even includes one of Snoopy's famous air battles with the Red Baron. Next to the Christmas special, this Peanuts short has everything a fan could wish for.
"The Nightmare Before Christmas"
Tim Burton produced this strange stop-motion adventure focusing on Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King. Jack rules over the Halloween holiday and scares all the boys and girls like a good ghoul should. However, when he discovers other holidays exist outside of Halloween, he decides he wants a change.
Jack has Santa Claus kidnapped and then sets out to spread his own kind of fear to all the good little boys and girls at Christmas. Some of the scenes in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" may be a little too scary for toddlers but this movie is just fine for most young children. The movie remains popular today, still hitting theaters every October for 3D showings to celebrate the Halloween festivities.
