The plot is sure to thicken further in the upcoming season of Girls with the departure of actor Christopher Abbott -- reportedly over creative differences with show creator and star Lena Dunham.
HBO confirmed the departure of Abbott -- who appeared in 12 episodes of the comedy's first two seasons -- on Thursday. "(Chris) is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena (Dunham), Judd (Apatow) and the entire Girls cast and crew, but right now he's working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show," reps for the actor told The Hollywood Reporter.
On the show -- which documents the experiences of a group of girls in their early 20's -- Abbott plays Charlie Dattolo, the on-again, off-again boyfriend of Marnie Michaels, portrayed by Allison Williams. The pair split in season 1, reunited as a couple in the season 2 finale, so it's unclear where the plot will lead in the new season, which is currently in production.
The New York Post first broke the story and reported that Abbott's departure came after the actor repeatedly butted heads with Dunham.
