Franklin says Houston's mother raised her well

NEW YORK (AP) — Aretha Franklin says Cissy Houston raised her daughter Whitney Houston well — and that an interview where Franklin said parents need to make sure children "leave home prepared" was taken out of context.

Franklin released a statement Wednesday, four days after Houston's funeral. She was expected to sing at the funeral in Newark, N.J., Houston's hometown, but bowed out because of leg spasms she said she suffered after a concert at Radio City Music Hall the night before. She performed again at Radio City the night of Houston's funeral, and paid tribute to Houston as "a very fine young lady."

In an interview about Houston on NBC's "Today" show last week, Al Roker asked Franklin about Houston's superstardom.

Franklin said: "I think parents have to really talk to their children before they leave home ... (that they) leave home prepared, really. She left home with all the right things."

After Franklin didn't attend the funeral, there were some reports that Houston's mother was upset over Franklin's comments and that Franklin was uninvited, a charge Franklin denies.

"Cissy Houston and I have been longtime friends for almost 50 years.  I have four invitations and parking passes that were sent to me for the funeral," Franklin said. "Cissy does not need ridiculous speculation and neither do I — particularly at this time."

Franklin also said her full statement — "This is no reflection on Cissy or Nippy's upbringing," using a nickname for Houston — wasn't aired (a request for comment wasn't immediately returned by the "Today" show).

"Knowing Cissy as well as I do, I know Whitney left home right and properly.  I was generalizing and it was a well-intended statement for any young adult coming into the music industry," she said. "I was not speaking of anyone specifically. "

Houston had fought substance abuse for years. She was found dead in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Feb. 11, the day before the Grammy Awards. A cause of death has yet to be determined.

Whitney' Houston's mother raised her daughter well. As an adult she made bad choices, that had nothing to do with her mother. They were just bad choices with bad consequences.

I am of a certainty that enough is enough. Let this lovely woman who accomplished a lot in her lifetime rest in peace. If you want to throw some
stones, throw them at Elvis Preseley, Jimmy Hendricks, Michael Jackson and Ray Charles to name a few who made some very bad choices. However, een with their bad choices they were all accomplished individuals, so what is holding all of you back?
All of you punks purchased their music as well and that is all that most of you are good for?.

        Don't stop there...add Marilyn Monroe,Anna Nicole Smith,Heath Ledger,River Phonix.
All of them are artist/performers/actors all dying from the same bad choices.
They are more in the *What could have been*........

People, enough is enough! Just leave well enough alone. It isn't your family. Ms. Whitney Houston wasn't your family member, neither your mother or daughter. Let her rest in peace, and pray that her mother and daughter can overcome their grief. None of us on the face of this planet can cast a stone without reproach.
Every time you post a negative comment, you are actually making yourself part of a PAST problem. Be a part of a positive out come and wish that family well.
There are bigger issues in the world now, war, hunger, slavery, homelessness, jobless families, unemployment, starvation, etc.

Whitney's mother did everything she could for her, including interventions to help with her addictions.

I remember about 7/8 yrs ago when Cissy forced Whitney into rehab after getting a court injunction with the sheriffs at Houston’s door! Alledgely, within past year or 2, Whitney threatened Bobby Kristina re; the same after hearing her own daughter had a substance abuse issue. (Bobby B was on Heroine, weed, booze, etc.) I hope and pray Bobbi Kristina gets helps & deliverance if she is following down the same path. In light of her mother's death, The media (paparazzis) will be even more on her with a fine tooth comb. She's living a microscopic life.

A child can be raised perfectly and turn out all wrong. I know...I have one of them.

So true. All too often parents are blamed when children decide to act like fools , drinking, doing drugs, engaging in risky sex, etc.

A parent can teach a child right from wrong and give them a good upbringing... It doesnt mean that the child, when it reaches adulthood, wont decide for itself to go a different direction. Once a person reaches a certain age, they are responsible for themselves.

Her mom staged multiple interventions. There wasn't much more Cissy could have done. An addict has to first acknowledge the problem and second, want to quit. From the interviews I've seen with Whitney, she wasn't willing to do either. Children are not puppets that do as you tell them. Think about it, do you do everything your parents tell you to do?

Rest in Peace Whitney! You gave us your best, I don't know a perfect person on this earth! The picture was beautiful on the cover of the Enquire, although sad, but it does bring closure a lot of people wanted to see Whitney for the last time. I was just waiting for the National Enquire to do something, they always do! Shouldn't be no surprise!!!!

I pray for comfort & peace for Whitney's entire family. Let's stop speculating & judging others period. Let's focus on lifting each other up & stop tearing one another down. In Aretha Franklin's own words: "Think about the hits and forget the misses." I agree. We've all fallen down, but the important thing is that we get back up! Stay Positive!! :o)

The media is trying to make a story where there is no story. These people are family and friends - they love each other and have each other's back. No more needs to be said about this.

The bottom line is that Whitney was responsible for herself. After all, she was an adult. I will always miss her.

You can't blame parents for everything. Lots of parents raise several kids and only one will have a problem. People sometimes don't learn to cope well.

No matter how well you raise them, when they become adults, their decisions are their own. All you can do is teach them the difference between good and bad. Which one they choose as an adult is not under a parent's control.

Poor judgement, sad results, DEATH is forever life is not a joke if you waste it you don't get another chance to get it right.Let this be a lesson to all who think one more time is not going to hurt me, it can kill you.

Aretha Franklin is one classy lady herself. Parents cannot be with their children 24/7. Parents can only instill good values and hope that their children will make sound, good choices.

Whitney's drug addiction while unfortunate was and is NOT a reflection of her upbringing obviously.

I don't think Bobby Brown should be rolled under the bus either.

Noone forced Whitney's hand to abuse substances and drink. That was a choice she made.

Cissy did the best that any mother could have done. We can only raise our children. We cannot lead their lives for them.

Leave Whitney alone. Leave her Mother alone and her daughter. Karma can be quite a pain, so those of you who feel it is okay to post hateful words regarding Ms. Houston, Aretha Franklin et al should realize you will reap what you sow.
