The Force Is With 'Star Wars: Episode I 3D'

Contrary to what most fans will tell you, the Force is with "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D." The first of the three prequels is regarded as the biggest disappointment for enthusiasts of the space saga. Friday's successful midnight screenings proved otherwise. Even a talking Rastafarian alien named Jar Jar Binks couldn't keep dedicated enthusiasts away from the multiplexes.

The movie made $1.1 million in midnight screenings. Fans were lined up early, donning costumes, lightsabers, and either Darth Maul 3D glasses or Podracer 3D glasses depending on what theater you chose. People were talking about everything from how they wished the original "Star Wars" was put out in 3D first to what the latest lightsaber phone app sounded like. It was a true mix of generations, fathers, mothers, daughters, and sons waiting anxiously together to be let into their theater.

Early box office predictions targeted the movie to bring in a little over $20 million for the whole weekend. Friday matinees were so well attended that by 1:30 p.m. the movie already made $11 million. The actual take for the entire weekend was $23 million. That's impressive for a film that's 13 years old and doesn't have much money to recoup as far as budget is concerned.

As far as the actual experience goes, it was cool to see Darth Maul's fight scene, the pod race, and climactic space battle in 3D. If you're expecting scenes where lightsabers and lasers come out at you, you're going to be disappointed. The movie looks exactly how George Lucas and John Knoll described it would in interviews. The picture is layered and has more depth. I would recommend any fan of "Star Wars" go see it just for the experience.

Lucasfilm plans to release one film a year, meaning fans won't see the original "Star Wars" in 3D until 2015. We'll have to weather two more years of whining from prequel haters. However, it gives me plenty of time to prepare myself for the ordeal of having to see Ewoks in 3D.

The three prequels were not good enough to have stood on their own. Take off the Star Wars name and they are three boring B movies.

The only WORSE sequels/prequels that I can think of, other than these three poor excuses for Star Wars, are the two Matrix movies. The two Matrix sequels were so bad they were appalling. George Lucas should have quit while he was ahead, but no, he is still trying to make wine out of rotten grapes.

Wait, so this reviewer honestly think the Ewoks are worse than Jar Jar in Phantom Menace? Wow.

Most 3D movies are made so that the picture comes out at you. I have motion sickness and I MOST of the time come out of 3D's with a strong headache and stomach pains. So I was very worried going into the movie, but I wanted to see it so bad. Thank you George Lucas for making the 3D actually sinks into the screen and shows depth, not popping out at you. I walked out of that movie with no problems what so ever. I don't know what you call it but it was awsome.

Let's take a detailed look at Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back

When Luke Skywalker left planet Daegobah Yoda said, " There is another ! ! "
Really ? Princess Leiah didn't have any force powers or the stirring of the midicloreans. So how in the hell is she the other force power ? How come when Princess L was arrested, ( in Star Wars during interrogations ) Darth Vader didn't feel midicloreans or the force ?

What happened during the 16 - 18 years between Revenge Of The Sith and Star Wars ?

What happened after Return Of The Jedi and all the Empire's Starships and destroyers ?

The books fill in those gaps very well. The Thrawn Trilogy is amazing, it takes place i think 5 years after Return of the Jedi. If you don't feel like reading those books, look at the plot details on wookiepedia

A lot of the questions you have are addressed in the official novels of the original trilogy and (as was said by Prime above) in the expanded universe novels. Currently, the 18-20 year break between "Revenge of the Sith" and "A New Hope" is more or less off-limits because Lucas and his team are working on that story for the upcoming live-action series due out in a year or two. As for Leia's Force abilities, they were latent and not used until she started focusing on it as Luke suggested when he revealed she was his sister.

How many times, George? How many times can you possibly re-hash the same tired old stuff?

Hey 13 years from now I hope they don't release this movie again in smell a roma 4-D because I don't think want to smell the cauterized blood scent from the killing of Qui-Gon Jinn and of Darth Maul and also to find out what jar jar blinks really smells like.

Just Lucas repackaging his work like he always does just to put more loot in his pocket. His creativity is asleep in a hammock somewhere because he's fresh out of samurai flicks to lift plot ideas from. Go watch the Kurasawa film "The Hidden Fortress" then Phantom Menance and the first Star Wars movie on video -- you'll see what I mean. Think I'm skipping this gimmick.

you think that we don't know that KurOsawa was a big influence on Lucas? You think that you are showing how hip you are dropping KurOsawa's name? You didn't even spell it right. And Lucas gives a bunch of his money away to charities. Before you try and be a "cool contrarian" by dropping the name of some foreign director you think is "obscure", do some research first.

Get a grip laser breath...lol. Not trying to be anything. Actually I did do research including seeing the film at a foreign movie festival where I was struck how similar some of the scenes in "The Hidden Fortress" were directly represented in "Star Wars: The New Hope." There is a difference between being inspired by ideas in a film and actually taking scenes from it and duplicating them. I'm entitled to my opinion just as you are. My criticism is primarily how he repackages his old films. Take off your Wookie costume and get real.

Who could sit through those awful prequels again? My God, it's a tragedy that you can't teach good taste. Good job, morons on spending this week's allowance that your parents continue to give you despite the fact that you're turning forty three next week and still living in their basement.

I went on opening day here in the Philippines, there were maybe 10 people in the whole theater, one of my buddies asked me what Star Wars was about, he had never seen any of them.

The fact that Phantom Menace in 3D re-release has been doing well at the box office just proves how little power the Plinkett bandwagon has! Sure, it opened at #4 at the box office. But keep in mind, it is a 12 year old movie, and it has been on Blu-ray for a few months now. I for one, love all 6 Star Wars movie! Okay, let me re-write that, I enjoy Menace and Clones quite well, love Revenge of the Sith a lot, and I'm practically married to the Original Trilogy! Star Wars is just plain awesome! I for one, am seeing it tomorrow with my friend. And I am so glad Goerge Lucas decided to re-release them once a year, so I can have something to look forward to each year! May the Force be with you!

are you people kidding me or what! this was the worst 3D movie I ever saw! and no I was not expecting lasers and that sort of stuff coming at me! this movie was done so badly. while i was watching the movie i was lift my 3D glasses to see if I saw a DIFFERENCE which there was none!
only 3 or 4 times during the movie did I feel I was actually in the scene, other then that this movie SUCKED BIT TIME.
SAVE YOUR MONEY, IF YOU SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE IN 2D IT DOESN'T CHANGE MUCH IN 3 D!
