Fanboys welcome (*slash wanted): Fandango, one of the leading online ticketing sites, is attempting to increase its profile among fanboys by hosting its first on-site space at Comic-Con this week.
Located near the Hard Rock Hotel, a block away from the convention center in San Diego, the online ticketing site is calling its space the Fandango Lobby, which is designed to resemble a retro-modern movie theater lobby, featuring usherettes handing out goodies and encouraging guests to sign up for the site’s fan alerts.
Guests of the lobby also can sign up for daily sweepstakes prizes including an iPad, Chrome book, Samsung Smart TV and five years of movie tickets.
The site’s first-ever physical presence at Comic-Con (it’s also co-sponsoring a party Thursday night with Summit Entertainment) is a clear effort by Fandango to interact directly with its largest consumer base — fanboys. Though “Pacific Rim” struggled overall at the box office last weekend, Fandango contributed a larger-than-average share of ticket sales for the fanboy-driven film.
Fandango has been increasing its theater footprint lately, adding the Pacific Grove theater in Los Angeles to its roster, as well as extending its ticketing capabilities to IMDB’s site and mobile app.
