Eric Bana to Play Elvis Presley in 'Elvis & Nixon'

Photo: Jason Kempin/Getty ImagesEric Bana is set to play Elvis Presley in the feature film Elvis & Nixon, which marks the directorial debut of Cary Elwes. Bana also will executive produce.

    Danny Huston
is in final negotiations to play President Richard M. Nixon in the movie, which centers on a Dec. 21, 1970, visit that Presley paid to Nixon at the White House.

The meeting was initiated by Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit and suggesting that he be made a "Federal Agent-at-Large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. Presley brought with him family photos and a Colt 45 pistol as a personal gift to the president.

Elwes wrote the screenplay along with Joey Sagal and Hanala Sagal.

    Michael Benaroya
(Margin Call) and Holly Wiersma (Bobby) will produce.

Australian actor Bana will exec produce through his production company Pick Up Truck Pictures (Love the Beast), which will mark the company's first U.S. production.

The movie, which will shoot in Shreveport, La., and Los Angeles, is being financed by Michael Benaroya's Benaroya Pictures.

Bana, repped by WME and attorney Robert Offer, recently joined the Lakeshore Entertainment diamond-heist thriller Brilliant and just wrapped shooting Blackbird.

Huston, repped by ICM and Julian Belfrage Associates, will reprise his role of Poseidon in the upcoming Clash of the Titans sequel.

Elwes' recent credits include No Strings Attached and the upcoming The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

With computer graphics, you can make anyone look like Elvis. In Tron they made Jeff Bridges look like Jeff Bridges.

Thanks for the laugh! That was a scary Jeff Bridges in Tron though.

Why can't they pick someone who looks like Elvis?

Sometimes the better actor doesn't look like the person they're playing. I'd rather have someone be a good actor that doesn't look much like the part than look exactly like the part but be a terrible actor.

From what I can see, this is going to be one awkward movie...

Doesn't even look anything like Elvis. We need a Southern boy to play Elvis.

Were all the Elvis impersonators in Las Vegas unavailable? Why go with an established actor who looks nothing like him when there is an endless amount of talent waiting for a chance to perform, and would better fit the part?

Probably because most of the impersonators are singers and this role calls for an actor. Besides, who says he has to look like Elvis all that much. And keep in mind the pic above is without any Hollywood magic.

Because in the article it says Bana also will executive produce. He hired himself, thats why.

Valag, are you an Elvis impersonator?

"Doubt there will be singing" - You are crazy, an Elvis movie with no singing would be like a movie about WWII with no fighting.

You'd think they could find a better "Elvis" -- just go to Vegas for a while. Nothing against this guy, but couldn't they get someone that looks a little more like him??

Sounds like this movie tanked before it's even started! Plus, Elvis was a son of the South, why not a Southerner?
    • Francie  •  7 months ago
Nope..no way does he look like Elvis. Not at all.

I GUESS THEY DO NOT EXPECT TO MAKE ANY MONEY ON THIS MOVIE ! ELVIS IS ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE LAUGHING !
    • rebelrouser  •  7 months ago
Any actor playing Elvis needs to be "All American Actor." That would be like a foriegn person playing President Abe Lincoln.
    • Jim  •  7 months ago
Really! How about going back out there and take another look around? Iam sure you could find someone that looks more like Elvis than this pinhead. At least make him good looking. Good luck on that flop of a film.

Elvis had grey eyes, and this guy has very dark brown eyes. Elvis had a larger, stronger nose, and more defined cheekbones.

Dom Deluise looks more like Elvis than this guy does.
