LOS ANGELES - The future keeps calling for Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington.

They had breakout hits last summer in established science-fiction franchises, she in "Star Trek," set in the bright human future of the 23rd century, he in "Terminator Salvation," set in an apocalyptic wasteland a couple of decades from now.

Advance ticketing for James Cameron's sci-fi actioner "Avatar" is skewing heavily toward male moviegoers, but sales are going so strongly that it shouldn't represent a problem.

The pricey Fox pic's theatrical run is targeting a broad range of demos, but online ticketer MovieTickets said Wednesday that a whopping 78% of "Avatar" ticket buyers have been males.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Titanic" director James Cameron releases his first dramatic feature in 12 years this weekend, and there's almost as much buzz about its costs as the film's groundbreaking motion-capture animation.

Distributor 20th Century Fox first claimed that its costs on "Avatar" totaled $237 million but more recently refused to confirm any number. Most industry observers believe the picture cost a minimum of $300 million to produce.

NEW YORK - The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the 15 films vying for best visual effects consideration at the Oscars.

Blockbusters such as "Avatar," "2012" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" will compete with smaller films such as "Where the Wild Things Are," "District 9" and "Coraline."

They are: "Angels & Demons," "Avatar," "Coraline," "Disney's a Christmas Carol," "District 9," "G-Force," "G.I. LOS ANGELES - A colossal budget, visionary technology and a down-to-the-wire workload on a film whose fortunes are a real question mark.

James Cameron has been here before on little ditties called "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" and "Titanic." In case anyone's forgotten how that worked out for him, "Titanic" stacked up 11 Academy Awards, best picture and director among them, and a record $1.8 billion worldwide at the box office.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Sony Pictures on Thursday said global ticket sales for its movies have neared $3.4 billion, beating a studio record with a range of films such as Michael Jackson's "This Is It," which raked in more than $250 million worldwide.

The Jackson film, which was put together from video footage of the late pop star rehearsing for a series of concerts that would have taken place had he not died in June, debuted in theaters in late October and ended its run outside the United States this week with $180 million internationally, Sony said.
