LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - In June, when Sid Ganis, then president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, made the surprise announcement that Oscar's best picture race would expand to 10 nominees this year, he was flanked by a couple of poster boards listing the 10 best picture nominees of 1939.

And what a blue-ribbon bunch they were: Time-tested classics like "Gone With the Wind" and "The Wizard of Oz." Classic Americana like "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "Stagecoach." Literary adaptations like "Wuthering Heights," "Of Mice and Men" and "Goodbye, Mr. Chips." Romance: "Love Affair." Melodrama: "Dark Victory." And even sophisticated comedy: "Ninotchka."

LOS ANGELES - James Cameron can deliver an audience, whether at movie theaters or at the Academy Awards, whether in the frosty North Atlantic or on a lush world light-years away.

Cameron's science-fiction sensation "Avatar" is among a strong crop of popular films in the running for Oscar nominations Tuesday, the sort of hits organizers hope can elevate the modest TV ratings the ceremony has drawn in recent years.

James Cameron's sci-fi saga was No. 1 at the box office for the sixth-straight weekend with $34.9 million, flying past "The Dark Knight" to become the second highest-grossing film domestically with $551.7 million and creeping toward the $600.8 million first-place mark set by "Titantic." BEIJING (Reuters) - A craggy peak in a scenic part of southern China has been renamed after floating mountains featured in Hollywood blockbuster "Avatar," with the province hoping to cash in on the movie's massive success.

The "Southern Sky Column" in Zhangjiajie in southern Hunan province formally had its named changed to "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain" in a ceremony on Monday, according to the Zhangjiajie government's official website ( www.zjj.gov.cn ).

No. 1 for the sixth-straight weekend with $36 million, the 20th Century Fox sci-fi spectacle lifted its domestic total to $552.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Avatar" raised its worldwide total to $1.841 billion. That's $2 million shy of first place behind Cameron's last movie, the 1997 shipwreck epic "Titanic," at $1.843 billion.
