Back in October, Disney dropped the bombshell that it had acquired Lucasfilm, and the company has just now announced the finalization of the purchase, which cost a cool $4.06 billion.
In a press release from CEO Robert Iger, the studio says that it is "thrilled to welcome Lucasfilm to the Disney family. Iger particularly highlighted the "Star Wars" property as "one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time."
He also goes on to say that "this transaction combines that world class content with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets, which we believe will generate growth as well as significant long-term value."
In other words: expect a whole lot of "Star Wars" content from Disney in the coming years in the form of new films, video games, and other media. The press release also notes Lucasfilm's other assets such as LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic, and Skywalker Sound, all of which were acquired in the sale.
Headlining the oncoming deluge of "Star Wars" material is "Episode VII," the long-fabled sequel to "Return of the Jedi" that Disney has put into production. Michael Arndt is currently writing the screenplay while new Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy searches for a director.
And just where does George Lucas himself fit into all of this wheeling and dealing? Officially, he is still on board as a "creative consultant" and has provided the outlines for the next three films.
However, in a recent chat, Lucas clarified that the role doesn't leave him with "much to do" outside of providing background information on the new productions. "[If the filmmakers ask],'Who's this guy?' I can tell them," Lucas said, adding "they have a hundred encyclopedias and things, but I actually know a lot."
Perhaps now that he's taken a step out of the galaxy far, far away, he can take a first step into a world that involves those small, personal movies he's been talking about for years.
