David McKenna, who produced the independent drama Renee, starring Kat Dennings of 2 Broke Girls, died Dec. 14 in an early morning automobile accident in Orlando. He was 33.
In the film, which opened the 2012 Florida Film Festival in Orlando in March, Dennings plays musical artist Renee Yohe and details her struggle to overcome self-injury and addiction with the help of her friends.
Homeland’s Rupert Friend portrays McKenna in the film while Chad Michael Murray (One Tree Hill) plays Jamie Tworkowski, founder of the nonprofit group To Write Love on Her Arms.
In 2006, McKenna launched Bonded Entertainment, a music label based in Orlando that represents Yohe and other local artists.
A Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman told the Orlando Sentinel that McKenna was killed when his sport-utility vehicle smashed into the rear of a box truck just before 3 a.m. His car was traveling faster than 100 mph in the center lane while the truck was doing 65, the FHP said.
A service was held Wednesday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lake Mary, Fla. The family asks that contributions in his name be made to the Great Spirits Benefit Fund.
