David Fincher Bows Out Of Angelina Jolie's Cleopatra (Report)

Cleopatra may have had any man she desired during her Egyptian reign, but the modern-day version is having trouble landing a director.

David Fincher is no longer attached to direct the upcoming project based on the iconic pharaoh (which will star Angelina Jolie), according to Vulture.

It is unclear why Fincher -- who began talks with Sony (the studio behind the upcoming film) in 2011 while finishing up work on "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" -- has exited the project, the blog reported.

Fincher is not the first director to leave the "Cleopatra" remake.

In 2010, following news that producer Scott Rudin had optioned Stacy Schiff's book, "Cleopatra: A Life" and was developing a project for Jolie, James Cameron was interested in directing, but got snagged to helm the upcoming "Avatar" sequels. Next in line was Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Ultimatum"), Vulture reported, but talk of Greengrass was soon replaced by news of Fincher's attachment.

While Jolie waits to take her seat on the Egyptian throne, she'll be spinning a reign of terror over Princess Aurora as the Mistress of All Evil in "Maleficent" - co-starring her own 4-year-old daughter Vivienne! -- due out in theaters in March 2014.
