BERLIN – Record ratings in Brazil and Spain as well as stronger viewership across the rest of soccer-mad Europe helped audience figures for this year’s Confederations Cup hit an all-time high.
The numbers released by competition organizers, world soccer governing body FIFA, bode well for the success of next’s year’s World Cup. The Confederations Cup, always held the year before the World Cup in the same hosting country, is considered a dress rehearsal for the big show.
This year’s Confederations Cup final between hosts Brazil and Spain drew 42 million viewers in Brazil, who watched the home side defeat the world and European champions 3-0. It was the largest audience for a sporting event in Brazil this year and Brazilian viewership was nearly 50 percent higher than that for the final of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
In Spain, 10.7 million watched, despite a midnight local kick-off time, making the match the top-rated program on Spanish television so far this year.
Across a further 10 key markets, including the U.S., Germany, France and China, more than 69.3 million viewers saw the Confederations Cup final live, FIFA said. That’s 11 million more than watched the final of the 2009 competition in South Africa.
