Is Seth MacFarlane suddenly one of the most fascinating people in the world because he is going to host the Academy Awards presentation to air on ABC in 2013 or is Seth MacFarlane going to host the Academy Awards presentation on ABC in 2013 because he's one of the most fascinating people in the world.
Moot point, really, because there has to be least a good 6.7 billion people on this planet right now who are more fascinating than Seth MacFarlane.
But, hey, do us all a solid by asking Barbara Walters that question the next time you see her. You see, Barbara Walters is going to be hosting one of her Most Fascinating People in the World Specials again and in addition to a genuinely fascinating individual like the guy capable of directing "Gone Baby Gone" she will also be interviewing the traditional type of flavors of the month that pass in and out the collective American consciousness just like a mosquito buzzing around your ear during a July 4th backyard barbecue.
Okay, sure, maybe there are a dozen people in America who think Honey Boo Boo is fascinating. And, sure, typist like E.L. James are always going to be fascinating when they write about kinky sex. Those choices are disturbing as they relate to the how ABC is contributing to the devaluation of the meaning of the word "fascinating" just as surely as they have stripped the word "star" of every single bit of meaning due to its association with the network's perspective that when Sarah Palin's daughter dances it somehow means she is a star.
Seth MacFarlane's elevation to one of the fascinating people in the world in 2012 seems quite strange considering how long his animated rip-offs of much superior original work has been stinking up Sunday nights on Fox. One supposes the defense will be that it was in 2012 that Seth MacFarlane made his big screen comedy film splash with-you guess it-a vulgar rip-off of a far superior original product, this time the comic strip "Calvin & Hobbes."
Of course, we all know the real reason why Seth MacFarlane made it onto Barbara Walter's list of fascinating people. Because the 90% of Americans who haven't yet discovered just how lacking little he adds to the history of comedy in America need to be introduced to him so that when they turn on the Oscar telecast next year they won't be turning to each other and saying "who's this schmoe?"
