    Clark County Library Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

    4 Screenings Starring Lupe Valez

    In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (NHHM), the Clark County Library is holding the special program "Diversity NHHM." This showcases the film series "Tuesday Afternoon at the Bijou: Lupe Velez, the Mexican Spitfire," which features classic movies that highlight Hispanic characters, heritage, and culture.     "The Girl from Mexico" (1939)

    "The Girl from Mexico" kicks off the year's "Diversity NHHM" series at the library's Main Theater on Sept. 6. The program starts at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. This 71-minute movie tells the story of an American publicity agent who bumps into a hot-tempered singing sensation in Mexico City. After finding his new talent, he convinces her to go to New York City. She agrees, but she also brings her con man uncle with her.

    "Mexican Spitfire" (1940)

    The Clark County Library features the "Mexican Spitfire" on its Sept. 13 program from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Main Theater. This 67-minute motion picture piece features the story of a newlywed couple and how they encounter many obstacles in their marriage. As they deal with their relationship's shortcomings, they also have to contend with varying issues such as fiery tempers, a meddling aunt, and a conniving ex-fiancee who is determined to break up the marriage.

    "The Mexican Spitfire Out West" (1940)

    Scheduled on Sept. 20, the Clark County Library's NHHM film program showcases "The Mexican Spitfire Out West" at the Main Theater from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The movie features an enraged woman who discovers her husband with another woman, then heads to Reno to file for divorce instead of the two spending time as a couple for their second honeymoon. The film has a total running time of 76 minutes.

    "Mexican Spitfire's Baby" (1941)

    The 69-minute "Mexican Spitfire's Baby" screens Sept. 27 at the Main Theater for the final leg of the "Tuesday Afternoon at the Bijou: Lupe Velez, the Mexican Spitfire" series. The program starts at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m. This final offering for the series is about a couple's adoption of a war orphan who, to their surprise, turns out to be a full-grown French bombshell.
