It's a sad, sad day in Hollywood. Charlize Theron is bald. In preparation for her role in the upcoming film "Mad Max: Fury Road," the Oscar-winning actress has shaved her trademark blonde locks down to a stubble.
While cutting off hair as gorgeous as Theron's should -- arguably -- be a criminal offense, she's hardly the first actress to de-tress for a movie. Here's a look at a few actresses who prepared for parts by cutting off their hair.
Anne Hathaway in "Les Miserables" - 2012
Anne Hathaway sans hair is almost as tragic as a bald Charlize Theron. Nevertheless, the "Dark Knight Rises" actress chopped off her gorgeous brown locks to play Fantine in the upcoming film. Hair wasn't the only thing Hathaway lost during the production process; according to reports, the actress shed an estimated 15 pounds to play the part of a dying prostitute.
Natalie Portman in "V for Vendetta" - 2006
In a truly cringe-worthy moment, Natalie Portman had her head shaved on-camera for her role in "V for Vendetta." Director James McTeigue recalled that (bad hair) day, saying "She knew [it] was coming. I put three cameras on her, made sure the clippers weren't stuck, and then we shaved her head." Obviously, the scene was completed in one take.
Demi Moore in "G.I. Jane" - 1997
Another actress with lovely long hair, Demi Moore famously went bald for her role in the film "G.I. Jane." Playing Lt. Jordan O'Neil, the first woman to train in the U.S. Navy SEALs, Moore also endured rigorous military training, which included her now-famous one-arm pushups.
Sigourney Weaver in "Alien3" - 1992
Back for her third portrayal of Ellen Ripley, Weaver shocked fans by agreeing to shave her head for the role. In the film, her character crash lands on a prison planet with quite the lice problem, and Ripley wakes up to find her self hair-free and carrying an alien embryo.
