While a lot of the speculation surrounding "Star Wars: Episode VII" has centered on possible directors, it's arguable that most fans are more interested in cast members, specifically the trio of principal actors from the original trilogy. It just won't seem like a proper follow-up if Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford aren't involved, and, according to Fisher herself, fans are likely to get their wish.
When recently asked about the upcoming film at a book signing, Fisher insisted that she'd play a part and even believed "it was common knowledge" at this point. That isn't the case, of course, as Lucasfilm and Disney have been quite mum about the nature of the film since its announcement.
That hasn't stopped Fisher from speculating just what sort of role she would play. In an interview with The Talk, the actress said she "likes to think of it as 'old Leia', like, sway-backed old Leia the horse. I like the idea of being Mrs Solo, and we've just fought and fought and I killed him, but I'm sorry. I'm sorry - that's right, I feel badly and I probably had an affair with some general."
Her representatives later indicated that these comments were made tongue-in-cheek, which seems obvious enough. However, her comments do open up the door for speculation--just what sort of role would Leia have in this new series of films?
It seems likely that she'd follow in her adopted father's footsteps by serving in the new senate that would emerge after the fall of the Galactic Empire; such a role would allow her to play a prominent role without necessarily serving as a lead if Lucasfilm intends to hand the baton over to a new generation of actors.
As for Fisher's co-stars, both Hamill and Ford are said to be open for returning; Hamill seemed particularly enthusiastic a few weeks ago when he revealed that Lucas had already broken the news to him and Fisher during lunch over the summer. Such a rendezvous would seemingly indicate that Lucas has plans for both of their characters to return.
Hopefully, all three will be involved in some capacity; it just seems a little disingenuous to refer to this as "Episode VII" if it's not a direct continuation of the original trilogy. Hopefully someone has Billy Dee Williams's number, too.
