Cannes’ Carlton Hotel To Be Closed For Renovation During 2013 Film Festival
Attention Carlton Hotel regulars: You’ll want to start booking your 2013 offices and rooms as soon as possible – elsewhere. The venerable palace, where a large swath of Hollywood conducts business during the film festival, is set to close for an 18-month renovation starting in August this year. That means it will be shut for the 2013 festival as well as the next Mipcom and MipTV. The Carlton isn’t only where some of the biggest players set up shop, it’s also home to many visiting stars and serves as a massive marketing tool given it’s adorned each year with giant billboards for upcoming films. I understand that since the facade isn’t being altered, advertising space will still be available in 2013. The closing will however mean no coffee and cocktail meetings on the Carlton terrace, arguably one of the most consistently packed spots on the Croisette. The project to renovate follows a recent renovation and extension at the Majestic – which now includes a penthouse with private pool. I understand the Carlton is planning to extend the two wings that flank it with the addition of about 80-100 rooms. Other hotels in town are gearing up for increased demand in 2013, but in general their rates haven’t yet been defined.
