Boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho Declared Brain Dead After Shooting: Report

Puerto Rican boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho has been declared brain dead after being shot in the face on Tuesday, Nov. 20, El Nuevo Dia reports.

"Medically, there's nothing to do," a doctor told the Puerto Rican paper.

Camacho, 50, was parked in front of a store in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, the night of Nov. 20 when two gunmen pulled up next to him in an SUV and shot him in the head. His companion, a former boxer named Alberto Mojica, was also shot; he died shortly after.

Physicians at the Rio Piedras Medical Center in San Juan, where Camacho was taken after the shooting, explained Wednesday that the bullet had been deflected by the boxer's jaw and made its way to his spinal cord. They also said the former fighter had suffered a heart attack at around 4:15 a.m. local time.

Born in Puerto Rico but raised in New York City, Camacho rose to fame in the 1980s and '90s. During his career, he fought in 88 professional bouts -- 79 of which he won. His opponents included other famed fighters such as Oscar de la Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Outside the ring, Camacho faced ongoing battles with drug, alcohol, and other problems. In 2007, he was sentenced to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. (A judge later suspended all but one year of the jail time and put the boxer on probation.)

No arrests have been made in the shooting.
