Three months after Whitney Houston's passing her ex-husband, Bobby Brown, is opening up for the first time about their life together, her death and the impression that their marriage led to her downward spiral.

Much of the Today show interviewed focused on Houston's drug use (which contributed to her death on February 11 according to the corner's report), but Brown was adamant that her addictions were present long before they met. "I didn't get high before I met Whitney," Brown told Matt Lauer.

"I smoked weed, I drank beer, but I wasn't the one that got Whitney on drugs. [It was a part of her life] way before we met. I worried about it when we first got together ... then I tried it. And for some reason I have an addictive personality. I wasn't the one who got her addicted to drugs. I'm not the reason she's gone."

That doesn't mean Brown feels blameless in her death. "Maybe I could have done something different to ensure she had a longer life," he said before adding, "I didn't know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, it's a hard fight. It's a hard fight to maintain sobriety."

Brown, who has been off narcotics for seven years, says that their notorious reality show, Being Bobby Brown, was a "wake-up call" for him. "We were able to see what other people were saying about us. We were able to see our drug use had affected our drug use and the love we felt for each other." But he is still hurt by accusations that he's responsible for her passing. "It makes me feel terrible but I know differently. If anyone ever knew us, if anyone spent time around us instead of time looking through the bubble they would know how we felt about each other."

Part two of Bobby Brown's Today show interview will air tomorrow.
