The 1996 suspense drama "Striptease" releases on a single-disc Blu-ray package featuring Demi Moore as a struggling woman who loses her job and also loses her child custody battle to her felonious ex-husband. This leads her to working as a stripper to make ends meet. Although intending to merely raise the money she needs to appeal her case in court before quitting, she finds herself entangled with some criminal issues and a controversy involving a politician, which threatens to seriously complicate and even endanger her life.
"Striptease" features many slick and well-composed shots in HD format. With a number of scenes happening either at night or inside dark interiors, black elements are notably stark and solid. The flashing lights and daring and flamboyant costumes render well without any trace of motion artifacts. Crush-free shadows accentuate Moore's body during her stripping performances. There is a seemingly intended softness seen throughout the picture, which favors the masking of the imperfections in varying shots of naked skin.
Other than some mild shimmering and edge enhancement concerns, this well-polished movie is free from crucial compression artifacts. Aside from its club scenes, it also displays some lush greens and white sand beaches in its Florida setting. Its natural-looking grain patterns offer a filmic look without evidence of inappropriate digital tampering.
The film's five-channel surround track provides a serviceable mix with clear dialogue and decent sound and music elements. Although it doesn't manage to impress, it primarily works for this mediocre piece's needs without problems on hisses, crackles, and other distortions. Speaking lines are clearly reproduced in the front and center channels, while environment sounds and audio effects linger in between the different channels.
The front-heavy mix mainly works as a stereo offering with surround components mainly limited to the track's music parts. The club scenes' incidental scoring is where the bulk of the surround activity is heard. Apart from this main audio track, the disc also supplies stereo tracks in Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese.
Unfortunately, the disc only supplies the film's theatrical trailer presented in SD format. Other than this, the package doesn't really invest in substantial extras. Subtitles are available in a number of languages including English SDH, Spanish, French, Portuguese, German SDH, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, and Swedish.
The story's major selling point is clearly Moore who is oozing with sex appeal in her prime in this Andrew Bergman picture. Getting her naked undoubtedly becomes the project's main attraction. However, poor storytelling and flawed acting performances significantly pull down the film's quality. It is quite a confused material that doesn't know where it wants to go. With a middling and overcooked plot, it is the type of movie that suits a rental better than an actual disc buy.
