The 2012 hit man flick "One in the Chamber" comes out on a two-disc set consisting of a Blu-ray disc and a DVD. The package houses the film's HD and SD copies. This modestly budgeted actioner by William Kaufman stars Dolph Lundgren, Cuba Gooding Jr., Billy Murray, and Claudia Bassols.
The movie tells the story of a seasoned assassin whose latest assignment involving a treacherous mafia conflict goes awry. Set in Prague, this hired killer first plays both sides in a gang war, then he becomes the target of an unidentified villain. As loyalties switch and killing machines get pitted against one another in an all-out mob war, no one is sure of who to really count on other than themselves.
This proficient video transfer looks great in HD format. Clearly deep-rooted in action, it rightfully showcases this mobster movie's well-orchestrated shooting scenes and decent fight sequences. However, there are times that the use of stunt doubles looks too obvious on screen.
The digitally shot images, inclusive of the minimal CG work, promote fine depth and glossy detail that even close-ups of actors' faces reveal such an amazing amount of information -- down to the finest lines and deepest pores. The stark contrast and the bold and mostly warm color palette make up for the minimal blocking and shimmering issues found in some shots. There is hardly a hint of detrimental dirt, noise or compression artifacts in this well-balanced picture.
For an action-oriented piece, the movie's five-channel surround material packs a satisfactory punch. At times, the front-heavy mix seems a little too reserved with the sound lacking some raw volume. But in the many gun-filled scenes, the mix is full of all sorts of blasts with solid low-ends and nice pans moving across the soundscape.
Most acoustic effects deliver enough energy. The track also handles the small details quite well. This includes its fine hint of city ambience that effectively floats through the rears. Speaking lines play smoothly without much trouble in clarity. There are little to no issues that can distract the audience from enjoying this action extravaganza's soundtrack.
This Blu-ray edition offers a lone HD extra entitled "One in the Chamber: Behind the Scenes." This featurette mainly discusses the film's story and production and it contains a couple of behind-the-scene footage and cast interviews. The package also provides subtitle options in English SDH and Spanish.
"One in the Chamber" is a reasonably entertaining popcorn movie. It primarily works as a serviceable time killer. Although it is an undoubtedly predictable, cliché-ridden, and mindless flick with a dull plot and uneven pacing, it aptly blends some stylish and energetic elements to make the story more engaging. As expected, its main attractions are its explosive action and technical treats. Amidst many bland and stiff performances coming from other cast members, it is worth noting that Lundgren's deviously effective, calm, and effortless approach in his role significantly contributes to the betterment of the film's storytelling flow.
