Success is the best revenge.
Bette Midler may have been snubbed by Tony voters, but her return to Broadway after a nearly 40-year absence is a certified hit. The producers of "I''ll Eat You Last" -- a limited-run one-woman stint that closes June 30 -- said Thursday that the show has recouped its $2.4 million investment after eight weeks.
The play features the Divine Miss M as Hollywood super-agent Sue Mengers, a brassy, pot-smoking commentator on all things movie biz who broke barriers as one of the first women to climb all the way up the agency ladder.
The production began previews on April 5 and opened officially on April 24, where it broke the box-office record at the Booth Theatre three times during its run.
